I find it helpful to say that we’re never not cultivating in
one way or another. Or as my friends Rob and Kirstin put it: Culture is not
optional. Which brings me to the joy of knowing Lee Camp.

In the immediate aftermath of 9/11,
things got weird and weirder for folks in the South who insist on giving
precedence to (or try to try to give precedence to) the Red Letter words in the
old Bibles. And before I tried my hand at writing a book about it, I was in
peculiar need of a community of people peculiarly committed to not losing their
minds in this regard. In a footnote in a book by Stanley Hauerwas, I heard tell
of a thing called The Ekklesia Project which I tracked down and, from my remote
location, joined.

This put me in contact with a kind
of rebel alliance in the land of my sojourn. One of my fellow Ekklesia
endorsers, it turned out, is a Lipscomb history professor named Richard Goode.
The fellowship of thoughtfulness into which Richard would invite me, a
fellowship largely made up of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, is
a longer story, but this was still 2001, and we’d just agreed to meet for
coffee at Café Coco. To my delight, his friend, a New Testament professor, Lee
Camp came along.

I hesitate to put it this way, but
it strikes me as too funny not to: Lee’s labors—a gathering of
consciousness-raising culture-- are like a crystallization of every form of
non-embarrassing Christianity Nashville has to offer. He’s a chronicler, a
collector, and a curator of available righteousness. It could be a skit, a
sermon, an explanation, a tale, or his own performing of a very long but
eye-rubbingly apt Bob Dylan song. He wrangles it all together in every event he
puts on (together with others) under the Tokens moniker, but he can also be
counted to bring the good prophetic word at the most unpopular of times (not
that the prophetic word is ever especially popular).

We once sat together at a clemency
hearing, hoping that hearts and minds might bend toward justice on behalf of
one of our brightest students even as I we were dumbstruck by the pain and rage
we witnessed as we listened to the family of the victim in whose murder she was
an accomplice. We discussed our feelings at length in the parking lot.
And I felt largely spoken for when Lee put it all into words a few days later.
He follows up on his on the tensions, the sadness, and the joy he experiences.
Tokens is one especially fruitful form of Lee Camp follow up. The beneficiaries
of his lifelong following up are, I suspect, countless.

So, it’s happening again tonight in
Nashville. This time at the Ryman. It breaks my heart sometimes, but I love the
principality that is Nashville. Tonight, I imagine it’ll look and feel just a
little more redeemable. Come on out.

Not too many moons ago, Sarah and Dorothy and Sam and Peter
and I knew the thrill of having the singer-songwriter, Will Marsh in the house
for a few days. Quietly social, keenly observant, and wittily bemused he was,
especially when we put a question to him, but all of this took on a very different
hue when he consented to open for Bulb in the basement that is the Bank Gallery.
He does that thing—Aimee Mann does it, as does Beck—where he goes vulnerable to
the point of self-deprecation to the point of funny to the point of liberating
for everyone paying attention. I got some words of explanation out of him later
on: “It's a long-held belief of mine that some mode of desperation is at the
heart of all great rock music.”

Lou Reed once observed of Laurie Anderson that, in a better age, people would be building statues in her honor. This marked one of those rare instances in which, it seemed to me, I knew exactly how Brother Lou felt.
The above recording is just about twenty years old, and it represents a time when Sarah was entering what Joni Mitchell refers to as the star-maker machinery behind the popular songs. She didn't stay there for long, but we still run into people who've paid her heed over the years and said so. One such person is Emily P. Freeman whose blog Chatting At the Sky is drawn from Sarah's song "Tuesday." Today marks the release of her latest, Simply Tuesday, and it seemed fitting to celebrate it accordingly.
Sarah, in the meantime, is still at it with all manner of work that affords delight--much of it completely free--yonder over here. Feel free to take a gander.
And deep thanks, Emily, for noticing.

Dear Everyone.
This is a meandering word, a whisper campaign, and a hodge-podge of announcements intended to catch up all interested parties in various goings-on especially if you're one for whom Facebook and Twitter and Instagram are forms of Antichrist.
To begin, I have a new book set to appear early next year. You're looking at the cover. As was the case with the previous three, it's possible that it might rearrange the mental furniture of many a reader. I'm hoping it will.
Dorothy and I also journeyed to Bonnaroo together and chronicled the experience. Our witness can be received here. This particular piece can be meaningfully read alongside my thoughts on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly and a Tom Waits' song on Father's Day.
While I have your attention, I invite you to take in this meditation which includes one of my most treasured stories and a recent attempt to bring Martin Luther King Jr., Peter Case, and Doctor Stephen Strange into conversation with one another.
And...I believe that's it for now.
Thank you for your time and attention.

will hear them talk in precise terms about themselves and their surroundings,
which would seem to point to them having ideas on the matter. But start to
analyze those ideas and you will find that they hardly reflect in any way the
reality to which they appear to refer, and if you go deeper you will discover
that there is not even an attempt to adjust the ideas to this reality. Quite
the contrary: through these notions the individual is trying to cut off any
personal vision of reality, of his own very life. For life is at the start a
chaos in which one is lost. The individual suspects this, but he is frightened
at finding himself face to face with this terrible reality, and tries to cover
it with a certain fantasy, where everything is clear. It does not worry him
that his ideas are not true, he uses them as trenches for the defense of his

"Are we a nation that tolerates the hypocrisy of a system where workers who pick our fruit and make our beds never have a chance to get right with the law?"
This strikes me as the most righteous (biblical, prophetic, Jewish, Christian, evangelical, choose your own affirming adjective) question ever posed by a sitting POTUS. I welcome other nominations. Thank you, John Lamb, for calling it to my attention.

Like a wise child whose imagination has somehow survived the pressure of popular conceptions of adulthood, Andy Harding is one of those rare people who's uniquely committed to devoting his adult energy to art, to feeling fascinated and doing something about it. What's more, he knows how to talk about what he's up to, how to invite people in, and how to keep us laughing even as we try to see the world more truly and soberly and beautifully, which is to say, artfully. He's at it this weekend at the Tinney, and you'll be degrading your own genius if you can go but don't. Here's the word on the amazing man's latest The Cygnus Loop (Cygnus, incidentally, is a northern constellation chilling out along the Milky Way. It's all Latinized Greek for Swan):
Andy Harding's work engages in a dialogue between materials and concepts. His process entails drawing, coloring, cutting, shaping, and layering disparate materials into harmonious compositions to explore the dynamic cycle of order and entropy that bears witness to both the emergence of form and its dissolution in the multifaceted processes that make up the natural world. Harding's finished pieces call to mind scientific diagrams, natural forms, and even abstracted figures in their wriggling, writhing shapes. Living beings, materials, ideas, and forces all occupy distinct positions in the grand web of relations, yet nothing is static. In essence, this work is a reflection or a meditation on both the interrelatedness and the unique singularity of all things.
In all that he was up to, John schooled everyone and anyone nearby in the work of being righteous stewards of our own enthusiasms. Whether he was describing food, a sound, Dungeons and Dragons, James Blish, a film, a musician, or a neighborhood, he was always inviting us—challenging us--to love people, pleasure, and place more than we feel we’re allowed to under the tyranny of what’s “normal.” If there arose a convention or custom that stands in the way of someone professing or getting animated about what they’re into, John would calmly destroy it with wit and magnanimity. Even his intellectual analysis—and I can’t think of anyone more positively intellectual than John—was a form of love. A few weeks ago, as he both celebrated and critiqued the things that happen on Facebook, he blurted out a quip that betrayed his effortless range: “I wanted George Jetson and I got George Orwell!” As ever, he was looking hard for anything that might aid or obstruct the work of people being good to each other. And in a whirlwind of curation involving books, music, toys, and ideas, he was hell-bent on keeping the things he loved in circulation AS GIFTS. He knew (and artfully demonstrated) that this is how the work of waking up to ourselves gets done. His life was a feat of attentiveness. May we live up to the gift he insisted on being in all he was up to. Love, prayers, gratefulness, and telepathic good vibrations to Terry Sharp, Judith Sharp, and Sarah Sharp Reynierson. Folks who follow these matters have been waiting for Charles Marsh’s
Strange Glory: A Life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer for a very long time. Way back in
the nineties, he spied within Bonhoeffer’s witness a whole new way of
conceiving the self: “The new being emerges in and out of togetherness…Jesus
Christ as life together activates the living consciousness of the other as
neighbor” (Reclaiming Dietrich Bonhoeffer: The Promise of Theology). From
there, as teacher, memoirist, and historian, Marsh took a long and fruitful
detour into America’s Civil Rights era, interviewing, recording oral histories,
and chronicling a past that isn’t at all dead in God’s Long Summer, The LastDays: A Son’s Story of Sin and Segregation at the Dawn of a New South, and TheBeloved Community: How Faith Shapes Social Justice, from the Civil RightsMovement to Today. Beloved community, the fact of it, the vision of the thing,
and the way it's always before us as a possibility is also named in his notion of LivedTheology, a project he exemplifies and enables and seeks to cultivate in others. It’s a vision of holistic gospel which makes Marsh
the kind of person who would see a live connection at work where others see
different compartments, issues, isms, and fields of study.
Take for example the spirit that moved community organizer John Perkins to
return to live and minister in Mississippi in 1960 even when his brother, a
decorated WWII war veteran, had been murdered by a police officer there 13 years
before, dying in his arms as his uncle searched in vain for a hospital that
would treat African Americans. Where does this spirit connect to the
motivations behind Will Campbell’s ministry to imprisoned Klansmen or
Bonhoeffer’s decision to return to Nazi Germany? Read Charles Marsh to find
out.

I’ll mention too that Marsh is the kind of person who would take the time

<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">Having written a bunch of things in pencil in a library book
while listening to Jaco Hamman speak at Belmont this morning, it occurred to me

<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">“Destroy the mental representations you carry about others,”
he advised. He also asked for a show of hands of anyone who’s dating anybody or
hoping to. This counsel is for everyone in every kind of relationship. You’ll
have to regularly give up what you knew (or thought you knew) of the person you
mean to love. Otherwise you’re relating to an image or an impression instead of
regularly taking in the fact of a living person in process, well worthy of
love.<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter"; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;">

<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Helvetica Neue";">And then a lengthy one from Abraham Heschel’s The Prophets:
“<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter"; mso-bidi-font-family: Verdana;">What impairs our sight are habits of seeing as well as the mental
concomitants of seeing. Our sight is suffused with knowing, instead of feeling
painfully the lack of knowing what we see. The principle to be kept in mind is
to know what we see rather than to see what we know.”<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter"; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;">

<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter"; mso-bidi-font-family: Verdana;">The possibility of knowing what we see (instead of merely seeing what
we know) and remaining perpetually open to the fact that we don’t yet know what
we’re looking at in a person, a painting, a story; that there’s always more to
be revealed (seeing and thinking apocalyptically) is primarily accessed
through…wait for it…hope which Jaco very helpfully contrasts with wishing.
“Wishing knows exactly what it wants.” Wishing is what many of us are up to,
habitually, most of the time, but hope is more radically alive to the bigger,
unguessed picture, the unexpectedly true and beautiful ever around the corner,
to whatever might awaken us to ourselves and each other, undoing our
prematurely made-up minds. When we’re hopeful, we’re eager to repent of our
woefully limited imaginations when it comes to other people and their infinite
preciousness, complexity, and richness. All of this is a central theme—I’m
guessing—in his book A Play-Full Life: Slowing Down, & Seeking Peace,
which I’m about to bust open.<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter"; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;">

<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter"; mso-bidi-font-family: Verdana;">He ended with is favorite proverb. It’s African: “My friends who love
me grow on me like moss.” He noted how moss has been valued for its healing
properties by cultures throughout the world and contrasted this saying with a
more popular one: “A rolling stone gathers no moss.” With all due respect to
Brothers Jagger & Richards, he challenged us to eschew the practice of
rolling stones, in spite of its predominance in our speed-and-mobility crazy
culture, and consider the virtues of slower, steadier, more deliberate
relationships marked by hope and expectation.<span style="font-family: "American Typewriter"; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;">

J. Todd
Greene isn’t going anywhere. This can be a frustrating realization for those of
us who occasionally catch ourselves grieving his relative unfamousness as if he’s missed
some boat, as if he should’ve devoted more time over the last twenty-plus years
chasing opportunities and generating interest. But it seems to me there’s no
shoulding on Todd (and let’s all stop shoulding on ourselves). What there is is
the gathering of intelligence, the sharing of what we’re seeing, the
documenting of our own insights, what we
believe we’re being shown. This is what I take to be the good work we’re all
called to, and Todd’s dedication in this direction, all day long and into the
night, has been a constant inspiration to me. More often than not, some line or
image he’s crafted is glowing at the edge of my thinking, taking me somewhere
new and strange. There’s the twenty-three or so Bulb albums he shares with
anyone who asks. And there’s the painting. Oh the painting.

I’m so
dependent on my conversations with Todd that I forget that what he’s been up to
might be news to others. One entry point is the PawPaw sermons. The short
version: His great-grandfather was a southern minister and colleague of the
similarly comported and way famouser folk artist, Howard Finster. Whereas
Finster abandoned the pulpit to paint Coke bottles and plywood displayed outside
his bicycle repair shop, eventually landing in exhibits around the world and on REM
and Talking Heads album covers, Todd’s great-grandfather kept at it in spite of
the fact that he never learned to read properly. In his sermon preparation, he
pencilled images on cards as his wife read biblical passages aloud. Standing in
front of his congregation, he’d consult the cards within an open Bible as he
brought the good words to the gathered. In the late nineties, Todd’s mother
presented him with a shoebox full of the cards.
What Todd did and does with his
grandfather’s images (Todd knew him as Paw Paw) is one of the most inspiring
things I’ve had the privilege of being near. Adding color, dimension, and
intensity of expression to his inheritance, it has to be seen live to be properly experienced,
and alongside so much else, it will be beginning this Friday evening March 7th at O'More College of Art and Design in Franklin. Remarkably, this marks Todd's first exhibit outside of Davidson County. He'll be there responding to questions and being awesome all evening.

I'd like to call your attention to the living fact of Carter Moody. In the final weeks of the 20th century, we met regularly in what came to be modestly referred to as Writing Group. Each week someone would drop upon the lot of us a few parameters involving a provocative starter-idea (Write a story involving time travel. Tell the tale of a lie. Recount a conversation without using dialogue), and we'd all set off for half an hour and return to share what we'd cooked up. Carter's offerings often left many of us in the dust, but his "You're doing it too!" delivery and the hopeful attentiveness with which he regarded our shots at creativity set a precedent for everyone in the circle of poetic intelligence gathering. He was intensely well-versed in the work of throwing lively words together and making sure we all felt invited--called even--to the process. What process? I think its literacy I'm talking about. As I view these things, my son Sam unwittingly channelled Carter recently when he observed aloud, "Literacy is about cooperating with people."

Over time, I realized Carter had been doing this sort of thing in Nashville for decades. He was there, ordering and stocking books on the subject of Apartheid in South Africa at the Downtown Public Library in the seventies and eighties. Around ever corner, he can be spotted giving the gift of his presence, time, and resources to countless under-advertised causes, artists, musicians, and local concerns. In recent years, you'll most likely find him at Bookman/Bookwoman on 21st Avenue, quietly mulling over a question a customer's put to him or tracking down a volume that might be just the the thing for the story-hungry pilgrim who's wandered in.
So while I'm pleased to have an excuse to recall a few of the ways Carter persists as a community pillar, an artisan of the possible in the Nashville scene, the occasion for doing so is the financial fix Carter finds himself in due to persistent health problems. He continues to devote his energy and his wit to all manner of good things, and he's especially keen to do so in the form of "perks" on the Indiegogo platform. But whether you decide to take him up on this offer or not, I'm honored to call your attention to one avenue for getting in on his act. Have a look. And thank you for doing so.

A few more details on this week's Montreat College visit:

It's the 19th Annual Crossroads Faith and Culture Project, and it begins with a 10AM talk ("Weird Religious Background") on Monday morning in the Gaither Chapel. Monday evening at 7:30 is Sarah singing all by her lonesome, though I imagine I'll attempt harmonies on at least one tune ("We See Satan Fall Like Lightning," probably), in Gaither Fellowship Hall. Tuesday night in the same venue is me with more speechifying ("Don't Believe Everything That You Breathe"). And the 10AM on Wednesday, back in the chapel, sees Sarah and myself wrapping it all up to the best of our powers ("Insert Soul Here").

We'll be awfully pleased to see, converse with, and perhaps even touch friends old and new. Anyone within easy driving distance who doesn't make it to any of these is invited to enter into a brief season of alternating shame and loss. But seriously, why wouldn't you make the trek? What are up to with your one precious life? We are a beginning.

I have a number of items to bring to your awareness. I take the liberty of including myself in the above photo seeing as I'm personally involved in one of them. For this, we thank Anne McCarthy, our very own Anton Corbijn. Except Better.
To begin, there's the matter of THIS EVENING. Sarah's performing (along with Sandra McCracken, Katy Bowser, Joy Ike, Steve Guthrie, Ruth Naomi Floyd, Bethany Brooks) at Belmont tonight to celebrate the release of It Was Good, a collection of essays on God and music-making authored by Ned Bustard and all kinds of people we hold near and dear. It's completely free, and the details are here.
I also invite you to explore the implications of the fact that Sarah and I are bringing our song and dance to the Asheville area next week. Two and a half days of goodness at Montreat College. No admission fee. We'd love to have you in on the conversation.
AND IN NOVEMBER, Sarah joins Ashley Cleveland, Sherry Cothran, and Cindy Morgan for what they're referring to as GIRL'S NIGHT OUT.
There are more us-related events on the horizon, but for now, I give you Sarah's two-part Image Journal interview. Here and here. We thank Angela Carlson for being awesome as usual.

Via the joys of Laity Lodge, I've had the deep pleasure of coming to know Beaver Nelson in recent years. When we first got to talking, it was as if a few close friends had taken the time to compile a few of our rarer enthusiasms (Evelyn Underhill and Walt Simonson's Beta Ray Bill, for instance) just to see what we would do when confronted with someone with whom we shared one weird delight after another. After a quick succession of "Me too" clicks involving Townes Van Zandt, John Byrne, and Cormac McCarthy, I realized I'd met someone who'd probably enjoy Todd Greene's envisioning of the chorus to Steve Earle's "Copperhead Road" inexplicably and suddenly sung to the tune of Lindsey Buckingham's "Holiday Road." Beaver laughed hard and took a moment to describe what he imagined Earle might do to me if I ever attempted such a thing in his presence.
This was all before I heard him sing and began to take in his complete works, a very present help in my hand-in-face days of bringing my dissertation to relative completion. The songs are all lyrical shots at hoped-for-coherence, somehow simultaneously disarmingly funny and self-deprecatingly moving. They let the air in unexpectedly. You don't see it coming.
After years of telephone conversations on the subjects of Steve Ditko, Elvis Costello, Magneto, and the self-understanding of Jesus, we've finally arranged an evening, THIS SUNDAY, when Beaver will bring his song and dance to our backyard. I invite any and everyone in range to come around. Consider bringing a little food or beverage you'd be willing to share along, maybe a lawn-chair or a blanket, and perhaps a little something to put into a tip jar. But if the thought of any such items serves to dissuade, wipe it from your mind. We've got you covered.
Reach me by e-mail OR hit me on the book of faces for details. jdaviddarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01439845582468769518noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32469612.post-36568547200754131222013-08-19T06:12:00.001-07:002013-08-19T06:12:40.751-07:00Famouser

Sarah's kind of going for it again. Not that she ever stopped. When I think about the pace with which she writes and sings and how it's only rarely accompanied by anything in the way of a signal flare, I recall a time when Prince, several albums back, decided to do a press conference. Someone asked him if his latest effort was a comeback album. "Comeback from what?" he offered back with a tired smile. It's not his problem that a few million folk haven't checked back in since Sign o' the Times. Who wants to live like that? Next question.
Sarah isn't listening to her own life if she isn't writing songs. It's how she pays attention to herself and others. I labor over sentences and it takes me a sometimes embarrassingly long time. She disappears into an oversized closet and emerges with something completely remarkable an hour or two later. Sometimes she's already recorded it.
This has been our life together all along with the significant change being the recorded part. Many a kind heart will ask her if she's still making music. "Yes!" my mind screams as I remind myself that I wasn't the one who was asked the question. Her responses vary. She'll mention Bulb, but not everyone is shrewd or curious enough to ask for the elaboration that would take them into that magical, soul-enriching world. She'd likely share a song--I mean sing it--right there on the spot if someone was to ask her to and she knew they really wanted to sit still for it, but very few people seem to do that these days. How's this supposed to work for someone who generally resides to the side of the star-maker machinery behind the popular songs?
Enter JT Daly. I met him at the Trash Humpers premiere at the Belcourt through our mutual friend Chris York. He started hanging around our domicile, introducing us to music, coming to softball games, eating pizza, and building Legos. "What does Sarah need?" he got to thinking. And Wendell Berry-like, communally-minded fellow that he is, he began to assemble microphones and speakers and other hardware from friends who weren't, for the time being, using certain forms of recording equipment to cobble together what we've elected to call Twin Pop Studio. It's sitting there right now. Minus speakers at the moment.
So now we have songs, many songs, and they're beginning to surface. The opening salvo is The Trying Mark which comes to you via a couple of very kind collaborators. The first is Aaron Roche by whose music we've been amazed and nurtured since we first heard him do an Innocence Mission cover in the artists' space at DPC many moons ago (Sarah: "!Blur My Eyes really does soothe the savage beast in me."). He's in Brooklyn being awesome now, but he made time to mix the album and provide additional instrumentation and vocals. And there's also the matter of Matt Odmark. Sarah opened for the league of extraordinary gentlemen that is the Jars of Clay operation, Matt's decades-long gig, way back in the 20th century, and something came full circle when Matt offered his powers of mastering to The Trying Mark. We're intensely pleased with how it all turned out. And relatedly, I'll mention too that the above image is the work of Beth Gilmore with whom Sarah is conspiring together on something or other on many a weekday. This and many more can be viewed and procured over here.
Even as I busy myself writing about it, tweeting, playing it for students, or foisting mix CD's and playlists upon people, I still don't know the best way to urge the goodness upon people. I wouldn't remove a song or change the order, but if you were tell me you're only willing to sit quietly long enough to take in one song on the album (That would be kind of mean, by the way), I would refer you to "When Things Fall Apart" and trust that you might now feel compelled to take in the whole thing. And if you wanted to drop in a little something to maintain the current of the Get Fresh Flow...I think that'd be appropriate.
That's about it. Sarah has a few specific words concerning the project's origins as well. Do please tell us what you think and talk it up as you see fit. Despite the risk of saturating the market, Sarah's playing a few shows in the weeks to come, and there's more music on the horizon. Stay tuned.
Let it be known that Nashville has, within its environs, a space called Owl's Hill Nature Sanctuary and that, alongside guided excursions, crafts, quilt raffles, and drawing workshops, there's a series of Saturday fundraisers called MUSIC IN THE MEADOW. This week features Sarah with Julie Lee, Sandra McCracken, and Corrie Covell. Lyrical wits and bearers of sacred intuition, all. How might you yourselves enter into this blessed situation? Looky here and scroll down a little. I know what I'm doing on Saturday night.

This one's for anyone within driving distance of Lexington. Tonight, Sarah performs with one of the essential inspirations of our lives, one Reva Williams, at what is alleged to be the greatest bar in the history of time. As is always the case, Sarah has new songs, and it will be a very rich time. I don't know how to publish someone else's instagram images, but I end with a shot of her preparing for a radio appearance. The girl is out and about. Stay tuned.

Reading this incredibly thorough Thom Yorke interview got me thinking about the way particular thinkers and artists came together for me in the late nineties and early aughts. There was a season in which I'd buy and read anything associated with Radical Orthodoxy with the same fervor I'd once reserved for folks like John Byrne and Alan Moore. As is often the case now, I found it difficult to grasp an awful lot of it, but I'd dutifully mark and transcribe whatever struck me as interesting in the hope that it might prove helpful later on. I don't know that anyone who's read Everyday Apocalypse loved it enough to scour the footnotes and journey over toward John Milbank's Theology and Social Theory, but I doubt I'd have ever thought to argue that there isn't a secular molecule in the universe if he hadn't given me "Once, there was no 'secular.'" Within a few days of the September 11th attacks, it was announced that our government's military response would be called Operation Infinite Justice at about the same time I'd underlined the phrase "nontotalizing metanarrative" in Milbank's volume. I e-mailed him to remark that we could do with more of such ways of viewing the world in our radioactive days, and he e-mailed back with one word: "Exactly." This was all the affirmation a young high school English teacher required. Throw in William Cavanaugh's Torture and Eucharist ("The distinction between politics and religion was not discovered but invented") and I had a way of talking about pretty much everything.

What these concerns have to do with Radiohead (or James Joyce or Ursula Le Guin or David Lynch) has been a driving question in everything I've written since, and this morning's Guardian interview almost felt like a checklist. Yorke:

We are still the generation who went into an illegal war...The commodification of human relationships through social networks. Amazing!.. Music that repeats what you know in ever-decreasing derivation, that's unchallenging and unstimulating, deadens our minds, our imagination and our ability to see beyond the hell we find ourselves in. My problem with bankers or, rather, the banking system is, that it's the ultimate expression of "Fuck you, buddy". There is no communal human consciousness, no will to co-operation, we are all slaves to the market. It's as if it has always been thus. It hasn't...

These bankers have made personal fortunes by stealing, exploiting and destroying our assets, our workforce, our resources and our planet. All protected, assisted and now bailed out by our governments using our money. High priests to a false god that they've done very nicely out of, thank you very much.

Which brings me to D. Stephen Long. I'd do my darnedest to appropriate the insights of Richard King and Jeremy Carrette's Selling Spirituality and David Loy's Buddhist economics before realizing I'd gleaned similar wisdom via his Divine Economy earlier this century. Long turned me on to Michael Budde who observed how that which passes (or is advertised) as Christian "often has as much to do with the life and message of Jesus as a GM Pontiac has with real Native Americans--nothing except a claimed, mostly imaginary, continuity of name." And Long himself gave me gems like this: "The market as salvific institution is and must be heretical." There's so much more to say, but I'm up against deadline as Longs appears among us tomorrow (see above). If you're unsure as to how to get to Neely, e-mail me and I'll meet you somewhere near Belmont beforehand. This is all.

"What are you Nashville?" I whispered to myself while driving Sarah to a performance.
"You always say that when we drive by the Whiskey Kitchen," she remarked.
And this is completely true. It's where 12th Avenue approaches Broadway. We're out of "the Gulch" and approaching Virago and an abandoned McDonalds that says "Closed for Remodeling" and isn't. My proprietary feelings for Nashville kick in right about then. What's going on here, place that formed and forms me? How are we feeling? Are we at the end of our tether?
My Nashville is often a kind of alternative universe in which all my genius friends are incredibly famous. Communal touchstones. Local visionaries through whom I'm able to see the world. A couple of them had a "big label" moment in the late 20th century as the Evinrudes. Think Philip K. Dick and Eudora Welty and songs like "Jimmy's On Crack (And I Don't Care)". They're Brian Reed and Sherry Cothran. They've kept right on thriving at every turn to the delight of anyone nearby. They've both in bands with Sarah. And THIS FRIDAY NIGHT,they're going for it again with Evinrudes tunes aplenty alongside a few of their own songs, Brian within the entity called Rosy Gears ("Scarface the Pitbull," "Demon from Hell," "Lily White") and Sherry eponymously.
What's more, there's the matter of Bulb (J. Todd Greene, Tony Doling, Randall Lancaster, Jake Larson, Sarah, and Brian) who haven't opened for the Evinrudes in over thirteen years and who just recently finished what I believe to be their twenty-third album. It seems to me (and I imagine there are at least eleven people who would agree) that if Nashville has a William Blake, Bulb is it. One might prepare a little by considering this. An EP featuring the latest goodness produced and mixed by the endlessly inventive conjurer and wordsmith Chris Leonard will be on offer.
AND we have a young fellow I occasionally spy at Bongo Java re-reading Lost in the Cosmos. After a years-long hiatus from Bulb-related phenomena, the alluring, enigmatic, hypnotist collector Max Perkins is scheduled to reappear.
It's a 12th and Porter situation past the sad McDonalds on the other side of Broadway. Doors open at 8PM. Tell the people. Nashville happens.

All apologies for the largely inactive blog. Among the resolutions for next month are some kind of redesign and posts a-plenty. I mean it, I think.
But before the year concludes, I'd like to thank everyone who purchased copies of Howard Thurman and James Baldwin's work for my students in the Tennessee Prison for Women. They were awfully appreciative, and it was a deep pleasure to tell each of them that the books came from folks on "the outside" who'd heard what we were up to and wanted to get involved. I wouldn't have guessed that so many people I have yet to meet personally would respond so quickly to my summons. Color me moved and deeply gratified.
In other news, this past semester was the busiest and most enlivening yet in all my years of attempting to involve myself in the work of education. Six classes, three universities, one hundred and twenty-two students. Four of the classes were at Belmont where I was asked to contribute a short meditation for their Advent Calendar. I drop it upon you now one day late.
Standing outside a Middle
Tennessee Best Buy having braved the crowd to secure some
items on a very well-publicized, Here-Comes-Christmas sale day, I watched a
woman approach the entrance with a tired look of determination. “Gotta get in
the spirit,” I heard her whisper to herself. I wished her well in my heart and
wondered how she might respond if I was to ask her to name and specifically
describe the spirit to which she referred. If it was indeed the spirit of
Christmas she hoped to summon to her aid, how had it come to this? Would her
beleaguered vision of the season be at all recognizable to its ancient sources?
Might some within the Jesus movement view this particular spirit as alarmingly
unclean?

In a manner befitting the
mindset of the weary and heavy-laden among us who feel as though we’ve shopped
until we’ve dropped, our Advent reading very helpfully includes oft-repeated
prayers for restoration and salvation (Psalm 80). And while we’re exactly right
to envision God’s affectionate purposes to include a deep compassion for us in
the specifics of our distracted mindsets, we’re nevertheless directed to
situate our visions of God’s deliverance squarely among the people who dwell on
the less cheery end of the supply chain that occasions our everyday low prices.
Ever attentive to the facts on the ground, Isaiah keeps it explicit: “The meek
shall obtain fresh joy in the Lord, and the neediest people shall exult in the
Holy one of Israel” (29:19).

an inescapably social goodness not to be spiritualized or privatized away, can
get to feeling very far away as we expend mental energies worrying over whether
our phones have been recharged or the package will arrive on time. Mother Mary,
lyrical reactionary, only makes things worse: “He has brought the powerful down
from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly…and sent the rich empty away” (Luke
1:52-53) How might we get on the right side of this gospel and not be among the self-justifying proud who find
themselves hopelessly “scattered in the imagination of their hearts” (51) by
these tidings of comfort and joy? We might begin to do so by allowing ourselves
to be made uncomfortable by the ways in which the coming kingdom made known in
these texts crosses the lines we’ve drawn and questions the economies we
sustain. May our spirits be enlivened and sobered by God’s good news.

There is much with which to contend at the Bank Gallery this Saturday evening. I of course refer to the fact that the space is playing host to one Fritz Hats who, for all his labors in other areas, has yet to exhibit artistically. And in spite of the fact of this event and the support of his peers, it should perhaps be noted that Hats still refuses to consider himself an artist in the traditional sense. "All art can do—and all it is supposed to do--is point out the juxtaposition between superficiality and infinity," he recently observed over water, soup, and a burrito. "I've always been interested in the seemingly extreme paradox, the paradox so extreme that we no longer view it as paradox." While eschewing the title of artist, Hats admits he feels comfortable being described as a fundamentalist Christian and a quantum physicist.
PPIF: Why Follicle Stimulation & the Multiverse?

FH: Because the phenomenon of follicle stimulation as an industry (the literal stimulation of hair, hair re-growth, hair grafting) and our investment in it illustrates the pretty solid scientific theory concerning the existence of other realities, something akin to what Einstein calls "spooky action at a distance." It's all around us.

PPIF: Are these realities observable?

FH: (laughs) The observer can only ride one reality at a time, but this doesn’t mean that a person can’t traverse the multiverse and somehow spiritually evolve. I'd say it's what we all desire, but many of us spend years doing it very badly.

PPIF: Our immortality projects.

FH: Exactly--wait--I mean...Exactamundo.

PPIF: How does the universality of this desire show up in our craving for technology?

FH: I'd say I'm fully convinced that modern technology (a smart phone, for instance) is a singularity device. And it's becoming obvious to everyone that the desire to stay in constant contact reveals our deep desire to live eternally. It might be a Tower of Babel, but the desire isn't anything to be ashamed of. When we come clean with it, we might even crave less crazily, learn to joke about it even. When we can't joke, we're pretty well done for.

PPIF: One thing I love about talking to you is the way you casually refuse the popular distinctions between religion and science. It's like you don't even know you're doing it. Could you comment on that?

FH: Faith and science are closer than any brothers, no mutual exclusivity between them, they fulfill one another. Science came not to abolish faith but to fulfill it.
There are folks in our world who've let me know how their feelings are hurt over the fact that we've blogged almost nothing over the last few months. This here is a mere beginning at rectifying the situation, the first of some tiny reports and a request for assistance. Among the courses I'm teaching this summer is a Wednesday night class called "Literature of the Civil Rights Era," and it meets in the Tennessee Prison for Women. We've had a very rich time so far in our conversations involving the likes of Toni Cade Bambara, James Lawson, Angela Davis. Will Campbell, Malcolm X, Anne Moody, Bernard Lafayettte, Daniel Berrigan, and Richard Goode to name a few.
I know that much of the lively back-and-forth of online interaction that used to occur on blogs seems to happen via Facebook and Twitter mostly these days, but I wanted offer anyone who might seize it a chance to weigh in with an opinion, an appreciative word, or a provocative question on the subject(s) of our course. I'll dutifully take whatever anyone has to say, ask, or wonder over to the class and report back.
I'm also wondering if anyone might enjoy entering the fray by buying our class a copy (or copies) of a couple of titles. Once we have twenty-eight copies of James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time and Howard Thurman's Jesus and the Disinherited, we'll be all set. Used copies are welcome, and I went ahead and made a "wish list" should anyone like to render us the kindness via <coughs> Amazon. And if anybody wants to make a contribution to the Life Program (through which all of this is happening), the link should get you through to the necessaries. If it doesn't, just shoot me an E.
That's about it for now. But I'll throw in that I do, at long last, have full-time employment for the Fall. Travel correspondent, Peter Dark, interviewed mini-van driver, David Dark, while on his way to Detroit City for this month's post. As will happen on an eight hour journey north, J.R.R Tolkien came up.
PD: So who is "The Lord of The Ring" anyway?

DD: No one. You don't have power, power has you.jdaviddarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01439845582468769518noreply@blogger.com1
