Over at Books & Culture they went ahead and put up my Arcade Fire piece. I think everybody'll like it. I'd put a link in this post if'n I knew how, but (for now) you can find it over in that there Broadside section.

Wonderful. I too was late to the Arcade Fire party and actually still haven't heard Funeral {blush}. But I'm loving Neon Bible a lot.

thankyou - lots of great stuff in there dave...

liked this particularly: "...assaults the listener like a summons to memory and vigilance"

great berrigan and blake quotes too...

and i'm thinking that blake could have made a powerful comic book about nobodaddy...

Great stuff. You put so well into words what I'm feeling about their music.

I never told you this story: My daughter (at 5) was looking at a magazine ad where some people where walking, eating a candy bar of some sort. Their legs were very young and athletic looking, and their bodies very business-like, suggesting that in the midst of a busy work day, a candy bar can make you feel alive and young. My daughter thought it was funny and I talked to her about what the ad was saying, adding your bit about how people who are not our friends try to trick us (I use that a lot).

I left the room and when I came back in, she was still looking at the ad and singing, "every time you close your eyes, lies! lies!" I was extremely proud that she made the connection, on her own, between the ad and the Arcade Fire.

"[we've] been handed a very bad blueprint concerning life, love, and meaning, up to [our] necks in false covenants; generations now trying fitfully to grieve the loss of wisdom, lament lost time, and gather together what goodness remains..."

I think I'd like to be a part of a school/church/community where this is the motto, in lieu of worn out phrases like "soli Deo gloria." (and why in Latin, again?)

thanks for writing.

pppp.s. - because I don't know how else to shoot this link over your way. I think you may enjoy this:

loved the piece Davey. I'll never forget the moment Geo introduced me to the band - gifting me Funeral for my birthday before it had even come out in the UK.

He took me into a side room at J&T's and played me "tunnels".

I believe the phrase is "they had me at hello"

wish I was seeing you in a week too.
